The Center for Youth Advocacy and Networking (CYAN) and Model SK Network are closely monitoring the national developments surrounding the proposed postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) to November 2026 and the corresponding extension of officials' terms from three to four years.
According to CYAN and MSK source, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has not yet received the enrolled bill passed by both chambers of Congress. Once received, the proposal will undergo thorough review before the President decides whether to sign it into law.
The enrolled bill seeks not only to reset the next BSKE to November 2026 and every four years thereafter, but also to extend the term lengths of barangay and youth officials from three years to four. Under this measure, barangay officials may serve up to three consecutive terms, while SK officials remain limited to one term in the same position.
Despite the legislative development, Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Chair George Garcia emphasized that preparations for the 2025 BSKE remain ongoing until an official directive is issued.
